The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles in Cartago, Costa Rica, is a Roman Catholic basilica dedicated to the Virgen de los Ángeles, a small representation of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child said to have been discovered by a peasant girl in the city. Though the original structure dates to 1639, the basilica was partially destroyed by earthquake and subsequently rebuilt. The current building, completed in 1939, represents a distinctive blend of colonial and 19th-century Byzantine Revival architecture, designed by Luis Llach. The basilica remains a major pilgrimage site centered on veneration of the miraculous image.
