The Monastery of Batalha, officially the Monastery of Saint Mary of the Victory, is a Dominican convent in Batalha, Portugal, erected beginning in 1386 to commemorate the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota. Built by architects Afonso Domingues and Mateus Fernandes, it stands as one of Portugal's finest and most original examples of Late Flamboyant Gothic architecture interwoven with the Manueline style. The monastery served as the burial church of the 15th-century Aviz dynasty of Portuguese royalty. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, it remains a national monument of Portugal and an enduring shrine to the Virgin Mary.
