Dilsberg Castle, a ruined fortress overlooking Neckargemünd in Germany, was founded around 1150 by the counts of Lauffen. In the 14th century it passed into the hands of the Electorate of the Palatinate, becoming an administrative center whose strategic importance made it a contested stronghold during the wars of the 17th and 18th centuries. By the 19th century, the castle had deteriorated into ruins and was quarried for stone. The site gained literary notice when American writer Mark Twain visited in the 1870s and documented it in his travel narrative *A Tramp Abroad*. Today, Dilsberg Castle is maintained as a heritage monument by the Baden-Württemberg state heritage agency.
