Perched above the town of Braubach in Rhineland-Palatinate, the Marksburg is a fortress founded in 1117 that exemplifies medieval Rhine Valley military architecture. Built primarily for defense rather than royal residence, the castle features a distinctive bergfried—or keep—designed in the shape of a butter-churn tower. Among the forty hill castles dotting the Rhine Gorge between Bingen am Rhein and Koblenz, the Marksburg holds unique distinction: it is the only one never to fall into disrepair, and one of merely two never destroyed. Today it stands as a principal site within the Rhine Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site and a cultural heritage monument in Rhineland-Palatinate.
