Beyazıt Tower, also called Seraskier Tower after the Ottoman Ministry of War, rises 85 metres in the courtyard of Istanbul University's main campus on Beyazıt Square in Istanbul. Built of stone in 1828 by architect Senekerim Balyan of the prominent Balyan family, it was commissioned by Sultan Mahmud II to replace an earlier wooden tower destroyed by fire, which had been constructed by Senekerim's brother Krikor Balyan. Originally designed as a fire-watch tower, it now serves a dual purpose, equipped with a modern lighting system that displays weather conditions through colour signals—red for snow, blue for clear skies, green for rain, and yellow for fog.
