Located in San Nicolás, Buenos Aires, the Central Post Office—now known as Palacio Libertad—is a Neoclassical Beaux-Arts structure designed by French architect Norbert Maillart with Second Empire style elements. Construction began in 1899 but proceeded fitfully with design modifications, finally opening in 1928. The building served as the seat of the Correo Argentino until 2002, when it was designated National Heritage in recognition of its architectural significance and interior artworks. Following extensive restoration, it reopened in May 2015 as the Néstor Kirchner Cultural Centre, becoming the largest cultural center in Latin America and the fourth largest worldwide.
