The Carreras Cigarette Factory, an imposing art deco structure completed between 1926 and 1928 in Camden, London, exemplifies early twentieth-century Egyptian Revival architecture. Designed by architects M. E. and O. H. Collins and A. G. Porri for the Carreras Tobacco Company—then controlled by Russian-Jewish philanthropist Bernhard Baron—the building stretches 550 feet along Mornington Crescent in gleaming white facade. Its original Egyptian ornamentation was notably elaborate: a solar disc honoring Ra topped the entrance, flanked by two enormous black cat effigies and complemented by colorful painted details. When converted to offices in 1961, these distinctive decorative elements were removed, but a comprehensive late-1990s renovation restored the Egyptian styling and reinstated replicas of the guardian cats at the entrance. The building now stands as Greater London House, facing Harrington Square at the northern end of Hampstead Road.
