Casino da Madeira, located in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, is a modernist casino that opened in 1976 as part of the Pestana Casino Park hotel complex. Though long popularly attributed to Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, the building was in fact co-designed by Portuguese architect Viana de Lima from Esposende. Niemeyer himself clarified in a 2007 interview that he considered it primarily de Lima's work, having provided initial designs that were substantially modified during development. The casino was designed in 1966 but construction did not commence until 1972, a six-year delay before its completion and opening. The structure is currently pending classification as a monument.
