Castel dell'Ovo is a Norman castle occupying the seafront peninsula of Megaride on the Gulf of Naples, positioned between the districts of San Ferdinando and Chiaia. Its distinctive name derives from a medieval legend attributing its foundation to the Roman poet Virgil, who—renowned in that era as a sorcerer and prophet—allegedly placed a magical egg within the fortifications to ensure their stability; according to the tale, the egg and Virgil's own bones remain within the castle, and its destruction would unleash calamity upon Naples. Now recognized as part of Italy's national heritage, the castle stands as a testament to both Norman architectural ambition and the enduring power of folklore in shaping a monument's identity.
