The Cathedral of the Assumption in Thurles, County Tipperary, Ireland is the mother church of the Metropolitan Province of Cashel and the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly, serving as the cathedra of the Archbishop of Cashel and Emly. Built in 1879 to Romanesque Revival designs by architect James Joseph McCarthy, it stands on the site of earlier chapels that had been the only Catholic churches in the town. The cathedral's establishment in Thurles reflects the archdiocese's shift from Cashel, which occurred after James Butler II's appointment in 1774; following the English Reformation, many archdiocesan assets, including the medieval cathedral at the Rock of Cashel, had been appropriated by the established church, prompting the relocation of the bishop's residence and cathedra to Thurles, where successive archbishops have remained based ever since.
