The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Funchal, Madeira, is a Manueline and Gothic structure begun in 1514 by architect Gil Eanes. As the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Funchal, which governs the entire Autonomous Region of Madeira, the cathedral stands among the few buildings to survive virtually intact from Madeira's early colonial period. Dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, it remains a designated National Monument of Portugal and a significant testament to the island's architectural heritage.
