CenterPoint Energy Tower, a 226-meter (741-foot) skyscraper in downtown Houston, originally completed in 1974 at 198 meters, underwent a dramatic 1996 renovation by architect Richard Keating that added a 27-meter extension. The redesign significantly reshaped Houston's skyline, and Keating would go on to design the nearby Wells Fargo Tower. The building's most distinctive feature is a five-story circular canopy added around 1995, intended to resemble a lantern but described by the Houston Chronicle as resembling "a hovering spaceship" when illuminated at night—a response to a rival building's greater height. Originally home to Houston Industries and subsidiary Houston Lighting & Power, it later housed CenterPoint Energy's headquarters and subsequently Reliant Energy until 2003, when the company relocated, leaving over 400,000 square feet vacant.
