Completed in 2003 in Downtown Houston, 1000 Main (formerly Reliant Energy Plaza) is a 518-foot glass, steel, and concrete skyscraper containing 36 floors and approximately 800,000 square feet of space. Built by Century Development on the site of the demolished Lamar Hotel, the tower is managed by Transwestern and currently houses the headquarters of GenOn Energy. The building features a distinctive nighttime presence created by colored lights atop its crown and along its Main Street facade that flash in programmed patterns. A specialized two-level trading floor with 30-foot-high ceilings occupies the 10th and 11th floors and is leased by Shell plc's trading operations. Upon completion, Reliant Energy occupied over half of the building's rentable space, and the tower quickly achieved 86 percent occupancy. It ranks as Houston's 25th tallest building.
