Located in Oiron in the Deux-Sèvres département of western France, Château d'Oiron originated in the 15th century when King Charles VII granted the domain and its great forest to Guillaume Gouffier, governor of Touraine, following French victory in the war with England. The château gained literary fame as the setting for Charles Perrault's fairy tale "Puss in Boots," and later became a residence of Madame de Montespan, mistress of King Louis XIV. Today it is classified as a historical monument in France.
