Situated in Montlouis-sur-Loire in France's Indre-et-Loire département, the Château de la Bourdaisière is a Renaissance mansion with roots reaching back to the 14th century, when a fortress stood on the site. In 1520, King Francis I commissioned its reconstruction as a residence for his mistress Marie Gaudin, wife of the royal Superintendent of Finances. The château later gained historical prominence as the birthplace of Gabrielle d'Estrées, who would herself become mistress to King Henry IV. Partially demolished in 1775 by order of the Duc de Choiseul for materials to build his Pagoda at Chanteloup, the structure was comprehensively rebuilt beginning in 1802 by Baron Joseph Angelier and completed by his son Gustave. Though modest compared to the great royal châteaux, it remains a refined Renaissance construction fronted by traditional French gardens, now recognized as an inscribed historic monument and currently owned by the Princes of Broglie.
