Château de Bénouville, a neoclassical masterpiece in Normandy near Caen, was designed by Claude Nicolas Ledoux in 1769 and constructed between 1770–74 and 1776–80 for the marquis and marquise of Livry. Interior decoration proceeded under architect Jean-François-Étienne Gilet from 1778 to 1780. The château's monumental staircase and exterior architecture were notably modern for the era, and it remains one of Ledoux's best-preserved works and a major monument of late eighteenth-century neoclassical design. After passing through several owners—including a tax collector guillotined during the Revolution—the building became a maternity hospital under the Calvados general council in the twentieth century before undergoing restoration in 1980 and opening to the public in 1990.
