The Château de Hattonchâtel stands in Vigneulles-lès-Hattonchâtel in the Meuse département of France, occupying a rocky promontory that has commanded the Woëvre plain since 860, when Bishop Hatto of Verdun first fortified the site. Medieval stronghold of the bishops and seat of their mint until 1546, the castle was largely destroyed in World War I. Between 1923 and 1928, Norman architect Henri Jacquelin, originally from Evreux, entirely reconstructed the château in a Neo-Renaissance style, creating what became the quintessential "troubadour" castle of Lorraine—a romantic pastiche that incorporated surviving fragments from the 11th-century original. The reconstruction was financed by American philanthropist Belle Skinner. Listed as a monument historique since 1986, the château now operates as a private hotel, wedding venue, and conference centre.
