The Château de Remaisnil is an 18th-century Rococo château built in 1760 on the site of a former medieval fortress in the village of Remaisnil, in the Somme department of Picardy. Originally constructed for the viscounts de Butler, the estate passed to Senator Jules Eleby in the late nineteenth century; a member of the Elby family contributed to the design of the Paris Métro, and a white-tiled underground passageway connects the château to its former stables. During both world wars the building served military purposes—as a British operations centre during the First World War and as German officers' quarters during the Second, with a V-1 launch site constructed nearby. In the late 1970s, Laura Ashley and her husband Bernard Ashley undertook extensive restoration and interior redesign; it subsequently became a hotel. The château retains five grand reception rooms with decorative features from the reign of Louis XV, and 35 acres of parkland including an English garden designed by Laura Ashley, along with walled gardens, tennis court, and swimming pool. It has been listed as a monument historique since 1986.
