Located in the company town of Colònia Güell near Barcelona, this crypt church represents Antoni Gaudí's unfinished vision for a place of worship. Commissioned by Count Eusebi de Güell in 1898, construction did not begin until a decade later, in 1908. Gaudí's ambitious Art Nouveau design called for two naves—upper and lower—two towers, and a central dome rising forty meters. Construction halted in 1914 following Count Güell's death, but between 1915 and 1917 the nearly complete lower nave was finished and opened for use. The crypt remains Gaudí's only completed portion of the church, yet it stands as one of seven UNESCO World Heritage properties he designed near Barcelona, collectively recognized for his exceptional creative contribution to late 19th and early 20th century architecture.
