Saint John the Evangelist, located on Penge High Street in what is now the London Borough of Bromley, is a Victorian parish church of the Church of England in the Diocese of Rochester. Erected in 1847 to designs by Edwin Nash and J. N. Round, the building was substantially expanded under Nash's direction, with gabled aisles added in 1861 and transepts in 1866. Constructed of rock-faced ragstone with a west tower and stone broach spire, the church displays geometrical tracery executed in Nash's distinctive manner. Its interior is distinguished by open timber roofs, particularly in the transepts, where eight beams converge dramatically from all four directions. Grade II listed since 1990, the church was initially funded by John Dudin Brown, a Thames wharfinger, and numbered among its staff the composer Arthur Carnall, who served as organist and choir master from 1872 to 1903.
