Colditz Castle is a Renaissance château situated on a hill spur above the river Zwickauer Mulde in the Saxon town of Colditz, between Hartha and Grimma near Leipzig and Dresden. In 1523, the castle park was converted into one of Europe's largest menageries, establishing Germany's first wildlife park. The castle gained international prominence during World War II, when it served as Oflag IV-C, a prisoner-of-war camp designated for "incorrigible" Allied officers who had repeatedly attempted escape from other facilities. Today it functions as a hospital, museum, and designated heritage monument.
