Nestled on a dramatic 70-metre rock spur above the Elzbach tributary in the Moselle valley between Koblenz and Trier, Eltz Castle is a medieval fortress that has remained in continuous occupation by the House of Eltz since the 12th century. Unlike most Eifel region castles, it has never been destroyed, making it one of only three in the area to survive intact alongside Bürresheim and Lissingen castles. The castle's Romanesque architecture rises from terrain bounded on three sides by the river, while the surrounding Eltz Forest—designated as a protected Flora-Fauna-Habitat and Natura 2001 reserve—preserves the landscape around this architectural survivor. Today functioning as both a residence and museum, Eltz Castle is designated a Kulturdenkmal, or heritage monument.
