Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove, California, is a striking modern structure of reflective glass designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee Architects, completed in 1981. Originally built as the Crystal Cathedral for the Reformed Church in America's Crystal Cathedral Ministries—a congregation founded by Robert H. Schuller whose weekly television program *Hour of Power* was broadcast from the sanctuary—the building was hailed upon completion as "the largest glass building in the world" and seats 2,248 people. It houses one of the world's largest musical instruments, the Hazel Wright Organ. After the ministry filed for bankruptcy, the Diocese of Orange purchased the building and campus in February 2012 for $57.5 million. Following a two-year renovation to adapt it for Catholic liturgy, the structure was consecrated as Christ Cathedral on July 17, 2019, becoming the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange.
