Located at 207 West Hastings Street on the edge of Gastown, the Dominion Building was Vancouver's first steel-framed high-rise, completed in 1910 in Second Empire style. Designed by architect John S. Helyer, the structure was financed by German financier Count Alvo von Alvensleben, a prominent figure in Vancouver's financial scene at the time. Originally serving as the hub of the city's financial and legal district until the provincial courthouse relocated in 1913, the building now houses a diverse array of tenants including law firms, film production companies, nonprofits, and restaurants. Today designated as a Class "A" provincial heritage structure and restored by Read Jones Christofferson, the Dominion Building remains a notable landmark visible from Water Street and Victory Square, which sits directly across from the building.
