Durham Castle is a Norman fortress built in 1072 in the English city of Durham, commanding a hilltop above the River Wear. Originally the residence of the Bishops of Durham, it has functioned since 1837 as University College, Durham, housing over 100 students and remaining in active use. The castle stands opposite Durham Cathedral on the city's peninsula, and both structures were jointly designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. Though open to the public through guided tours only, the castle retains its Grade I listed status and continues to serve as both a working university building and historic house museum.
