The Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial, completed in 2020 on the south side of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., honors the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe during World War II and the nation's 34th president. Designed by architect Frank Gehry in a postmodern style, the memorial occupies a four-acre park-like plaza featuring large columns that frame a mesh tapestry depicting the Normandy landings, alongside bronze sculptures and bas-reliefs by Sergey Eylanbekov arrayed throughout the grounds. The design evolved significantly from its initial concept as a "roofless" temple; after years of public hearings and revisions, final approval came in 2017, with a groundbreaking ceremony held that November. Originally dedicated to coincide with the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day in May 2020, the ceremony was postponed to September 17, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
