Standing on Dam Square in Amsterdam, the National Monument is a 1956 cenotaph designed by architect J. J. P. Oud in the reconstruction-period architectural style. Built as a memorial to the nation's war dead, it serves as the focal point for the Netherlands' annual Remembrance of the Dead ceremony held on 4 May, honoring casualties from World War II and subsequent armed conflicts. Designated a Rijksmonument, this pylon monument remains a solemn gathering place for national commemoration.
