El Capricho is a villa in Comillas, Cantabria, designed by Antoni Gaudí and built between 1883 and 1885 as a summer residence for Máximo Díaz de Quijano, a wealthy client who died before its completion. One of Gaudí's rare commissions outside Catalonia, the house exemplifies his orientalist period and the foundations of Catalan modernism, with its distinctive minaret-like tower anticipating European Art Nouveau. After Díaz de Quijano's death, the villa served as a summer retreat for influential political and economic figures. Following neglect after the Spanish Civil War, it was restored and reopened as a restaurant in 1988, then converted into a museum in 2009. Now designated as a bien de interés cultural, El Capricho remains a significant early work revealing the stylistic innovations that would define Gaudí's architectural legacy.
