Built in 1935 by Civilian Conservation Corps workers from the Elwha River Camp, this octagonal shelter in Olympic National Park was designed to serve the Altair Campground as a community kitchen. Constructed in the National Park Service Rustic style, the open structure features peeled logs supporting a cedar shake roof and encloses a central cooking fireplace with chimney. Together with the Altair Campground Community Kitchen, it represents one of only two such structures remaining in the park. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007, though subsequent deterioration of the log posts led to their replacement with concrete piers. Following dam removal along the Elwha River and severe flooding in November 2015, the campgrounds sustained significant damage, and the National Park Service has no plans for restoration.
