Eszterháza, a Rococo palace in Fertőd, Hungary, was built by Prince Nikolaus Esterházy as the grandest expression of that architectural style in the country—so splendid it earned the epithet "Hungarian Versailles." The palace gained further renown as the home of composer Joseph Haydn and his orchestra from 1766 to 1790, a period during which much of Haydn's most celebrated work was created under princely patronage.
