Standing at the entrance to the Bay of All Saints in Salvador, Bahia, the Barra Lighthouse (Farol da Barra) rises 22 metres at the tip of the Point of Santo Antônio, occupying the center of the Santo Antônio da Barra Fort. Built in 1839 and dedicated by Dom Pedro II of Brazil, this tapered masonry tower is distinguished by black and white bands and equipped with a Fresnel lens installed in 1890. The current structure is the second lighthouse on the site; its predecessor, constructed of taipa, was the second lighthouse built in the Americas. Both the fort and lighthouse were designated historic structures by Brazil's National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute in 1938, and remain among the nation's most recognizable cultural icons.
