The First Baptist Church in Phoenix, Arizona, completed in 1929, represents a stylistic hybrid designed primarily by George Merrill of the American Baptist Home Mission Society's Department of Architecture in New York, with working drawings and construction supervision by local architects Fitzhugh & Byron. Although rooted in Italian Gothic design, the building incorporates Moderne and other architectural elements, reflecting early twentieth-century eclecticism. The church relocated to a new site in 1968 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
