Built in 1889 during Fort Payne's industrial boom, the Fort Payne Opera House at 510 Gault Avenue North stands as Alabama's sole surviving opera house still in active use. Originally serving as both a movie theater and live performance venue, it has functioned as a public forum and cultural gathering place since its construction. The completely restored building remains a theater for live events and is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the National Register of 19th Century Theaters in America, serving today as a vital cultural center for the community.
