Located in Earlville, Chenango County, New York, the Earlville Opera House is a historic three-story theater built in 1890 as part of the Douglass Block commercial complex. The theater and balcony occupy the second and third floors, while ground-floor storefronts line the first level beneath a two-story annex. From the 1890s through the 1920s, the Opera House thrived as a cultural hub, hosting vaudeville acts, three-penny operas, traveling medicine shows, silent films, and later talking pictures. Competition from automobiles, drive-in theaters, and television led to its closure in 1952. The building faced demolition in 1971 but was purchased and donated to the community by artist and activist Joey Skaggs. Following restoration work begun in 1972 and listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, the Opera House reopened with live performances in 1976. Today it operates as a volunteer-managed, not-for-profit community arts center housing galleries, educational programs, and a year-round performance series within the Earlville Historic District.
