Located in Charles Town in the Shenandoah Valley of West Virginia, the Old Opera House—originally known as the New Opera House—is a restored theater designed by T.A. Mullett of Washington, D.C., son of architect Alfred B. Mullett. Opening in 1911, the building brought minstrel shows, vaudeville, touring theater groups, circuses, and wild west shows to the region. A projection machine was installed by the 1930s to accommodate film screenings, though the theater closed in 1948. The structure combines a two-story street front with second-floor offices in an older apartment building predating the theater by approximately twenty years, with the performance space and stage occupying the interior of the lot. Now restored and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it operates as a community-supported performance venue.
