The Harrison Opera House in Downtown Norfolk, Virginia, is the official home of the Virginia Opera. Built in 1943 as a public works auditorium, the building originally served as a venue for World War II USO shows and was known as the Norfolk Center Theater. The structure combines the former USO/Center Theater with an adjoining municipal auditorium; the latter now functions as storage and administrative space. Following a comprehensive renovation by architecture firm GUND Partnership, the opera house reopened in 1993 as a dedicated opera facility with a seating capacity of 1,632. The building is named in honor of Stanley L. Harrison, the founding president of the Virginia Opera and a former member of the Virginia House of Delegates, and his wife, Edythe C. Harrison.
