Located at 61 North Pineapple Avenue in Sarasota, Florida, the Sarasota Opera House (originally the Edwards Theatre) opened on April 10, 1926, as the vision of A.B. Edwards, the city's first mayor. Designed by Roy A. Benjamin in Mediterranean Revival style and built by GA Miller Construction Company, the three-story structure combined commercial and residential uses with eight ground-floor shops, twelve offices, and twelve furnished apartments above the theatre. The auditorium, which seats 1,119 patrons, features an orchestral pipe organ and was praised by the local press for its "costly decoration, rich furnishings and never to be forgotten artistry." Now home to the Sarasota Opera Association, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
