The War Memorial Opera House, completed in 1932 on the western side of Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco, is a Neoclassical structure designed by G. Albert Lansburgh and Arthur Brown, Jr. It has served as the home of the San Francisco Opera since its opening night. Part of the larger San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center, the building stands across from the rear façade of City Hall and has hosted two pivotal international events: the San Francisco Conference, the inaugural assembly of the newly organized United Nations in April 1945, and the signing of the Treaty of San Francisco in September 1951, which restored peaceful relations between Japan and the Allied powers following World War II.
