Built in 1891 by the Uvalde Real Estate and Building Company, the Grand Opera House stands as the oldest functioning theater in Texas. This 2-story brick structure in Uvalde showcases Richardsonian Romanesque elements characteristic of the era's Southwest Texas opera houses, with commercial spaces occupying the ground floor and fashionable offices above. The auditorium, positioned on the upper level, made the building an immediate social and cultural hub for the region. Ownership passed through prominent local figures including Fred Locke and the John Nance Garner family before the property fell into decline by the mid-twentieth century. Donated to the City of Uvalde in 1978, the building was restored to its 1890s condition and recognized on the National Register of Historic Places that same year, resuming its role as a venue for theatrical and musical performances.
