The Grand Opera House in St. James, Minnesota, completed in 1892, is a Queen Anne style theater building that served as the city's principal performance venue through 1921. Like many Midwestern opera houses of the era, it combines commercial practicality with cultural ambition: retail spaces occupy the ground floor to generate rental income, while the auditorium sits above. During its heyday, it brought theater, music, and comedy to this agricultural community and hosted local events. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 for its significance to local entertainment and recreation.
