The Grand Opera House in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is a theatre designed by Frank Matcham, the most prolific theatre architect of his era, and opened on 23 December 1895. Built in the Art Nouveau style, its magnificent auditorium represents, according to the Theatres Trust, "probably the best surviving example in the United Kingdom of the oriental style applied to theatre architecture." The Grade A listed building underwent a comprehensive £12.2 million restoration of its auditorium and reimagining of its foyer spaces and bars in 2020/2021, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. With a capacity of 1,058, the venue hosts musicals, drama, ballet, opera, comedy, and educational programming, while its annual pantomime tradition, unbroken since the theatre's opening, remains its most popular annual offering.
