Built in 1934 as a temporary structure for workers at the Fort Peck Dam project in Montana, the Fort Peck Theatre was designed in a pseudo-Swiss-chalet style by Eugene Frank Gilstrap and the C.F. Haglin Co. to serve the 50,000 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers workers and their families. The interior showcases open-truss wood construction and handcrafted light fixtures made in Corps of Engineers workshops. Though originally intended as a temporary facility, the theater became permanent, housing a 1,209-seat auditorium along with a stage, lounge, foyer, lobby, manager's office, and four dressing rooms. Today it operates as the Fort Peck Summer Theatre, hosting an annual professional summerstock theatre company. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Fort Peck Original Houses Historic District and has been compared to the architecturally significant Timberline Lodge in Oregon.
