The Greenbelt Historic District in Prince George's County, Maryland preserves the planned center of one of the few American realizations of the Garden City movement. Built in 1935 as part of New Deal public works initiatives, the district was designed by architects Reginald Jeffrey Wadsworth and Douglas Ellington as a "new town" intended to offer a suburban alternative to urban problems. Along with sister communities in Ohio and Wisconsin, Greenbelt exemplified mid-twentieth-century ideals of planned suburban development. The district's architecture reflects Streamline Moderne, Art Deco, and International Style influences. Notably, Greenbelt's center has survived with minimal alterations compared to its counterpart towns, earning it National Historic Landmark designation in 1997.
