Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Morris Plains, New Jersey, was a Second Empire–style facility designed by architect Samuel Sloan and completed in 1876 to relieve overcrowding at the state's other asylum in Trenton. Originally built to accommodate 350 patients, the hospital underwent multiple expansions and eventually housed more than 7,700 residents in severely overcrowded conditions. Following a 2008 closure order due to deteriorating circumstances, a new facility was constructed on the campus, and the main Kirkbride building—the original structure—was demolished between April and October 2015 despite significant public opposition.
