Guild House, completed in 1963 in Philadelphia, was Robert Venturi's first major work and one of the earliest expressions of Postmodern architecture. A residential building housing apartments for low-income senior citizens, commissioned by the Friends Rehabilitation Program, Guild House employs a combination of nondescript commercial architecture and ironic historical references that represented a conscious rejection of Modernist ideals. Along with the Vanna Venturi House, it is considered foundational to Postmodern architecture and was widely cited in the movement's subsequent development, establishing Venturi as one of the leading architects of the 20th century.
