The Gül Mosque, or Rose Mosque, is a former Byzantine church in Istanbul's Fatih district that was converted into a mosque following the Ottoman conquest. Built of brick in the Byzantine architectural tradition, it occupies an imposing position in the Ayakapı neighbourhood at the end of the valley dividing Constantinople's fourth and fifth hills, affording views over the Golden Horn. The building represents the religious and architectural transformation that characterized post-conquest Istanbul.
