In the Ayvansaray neighbourhood of Istanbul, near the Golden Horn at the foot of the sixth hill of Constantinople, stands the Atik Mustafa Pasha Mosque, originally an Eastern Orthodox church built in the eleventh century. Constructed of brick, the structure blends Byzantine and Ottoman architectural traditions, as it was later converted into a mosque following the Ottoman conquest. The church's original dedication remains uncertain, though it has been identified with various sanctuaries, most plausibly with Saint Thekla of the Palace of Blachernae. Stylistically characteristic of the eleventh or twelfth century, the building survives just inside the walled city, its dual religious history reflecting Istanbul's complex cultural transitions.
