The Hamza Bey Mosque, built in 1460 during the Ottoman occupation of Thessaloniki, stands as a surviving example of Ottoman Islamic architecture in the Central Macedonia region of Greece. Constructed of rock, the mosque was abandoned in the 1820s and subsequently repurposed as a cinema—a use that gave rise to its modern local name, the Alkazar, by which many Thessalonians still know it. Today designated as an archaeological site in Greece, the building preserves material evidence of the city's Ottoman period.
