Located in downtown Honolulu, the Hawaii State Capitol opened on March 15, 1969, replacing the ʻIolani Palace as the official statehouse of the U.S. state of Hawaii. Designed by architect John Carl Warnecke, the building merges Hawaiian and brutalist architectural styles. It houses the chambers of the Hawaii State Legislature—comprising a twenty-five member Senate and fifty-one member House of Representatives—as well as the offices of the governor and lieutenant governor. The building was commissioned and dedicated by John A. Burns, Hawaii's second governor.
