Hawarden Castle is a Welsh mansion in Flintshire that exemplifies the architectural tastes of its era through successive phases of Georgian, Rococo, and Gothic Revival styling. Built in the mid-18th century and later enlarged with external remodeling in the Gothic taste, the house became the estate of William Ewart Gladstone, the former British prime minister, having previously belonged to the Glynne family—Gladstone's wife Catherine's relatives. Now a Grade I listed building and National Monument of Wales, it stands as both an architectural document of eighteenth-century taste and a significant historical residence tied to nineteenth-century British political life.
